Someone once told me that the only problem with activist is that we are so darn active. While this was a funny statement, it was so true. We tend to try and do so much at one time that we are not efficient. There is one thing though that any one of us can do every day. That is candidate recruitment. It sounds so hard doesn’t it?
Let me say it this way: Look for good people in your life.
See how easy that was. All of us interact with many people every day. Some more than others, but we still interact with people. It can be at work, school, and church, at club functions or anywhere that people gather. You know who the good people are in your towns, the people that you think would do a good job of representing what is best for your families. The honest people, the nice people, you know them.
All too often we do not give ourselves credit. We figure that someone, somewhere will pluck the best candidate out of the sky and presto, we have George Washington XVI. Unfortunately, that is not the case. We are the ones that are on the ground throughout the state. We are the ones that are to be represented. Should we not be able to pick that person? Most of the best candidates do not see themselves as a candidate. It would never occur to them to run for office. They must be asked and you can ask them. In order for us to find the very best candidates we have to constantly be on the lookout, all of us. That means you!
All too often we have candidates that are less than the best:

Or we have no candidate at all. If we can recruit and elect the best people, our country and our lives will be better for it. I challenge each one of you to start paying attention. Look at everyone as a potential candidate. If you know someone that you think would do a good job representing your interest, then tell your local Committee Chair or just ask them to run for office. What do you have to lose? If we do not run a good candidate, then we have already lost.
